Fred McDarrah

Fred W. McDarrah (1926-2007) was an American staff photographer for The Village Voice, famous for documenting social and cultural phenomena of the downtown New York

scene in the pivotal decades of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Perhaps most notably, McDarrah

immortalized the beginning of the gay rights movement through his photographs of the Stonewall Uprising, as one of the only photographers there to capture it. McDarrah and his camera were also witness to the fight for women’s rights and gender equality, as well the anti-war demonstrations of the Vietnam War era, the historic March on Washington, and numerous other historically profound movements. Beyond social activism, McDarrah was also a prominent member of the downtown scene, photographing artists, musicians, and actors, from The Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to Allen Ginsburg.
