Bob Gruen's NYC rooftop photograph of John Lennon in his New York City t-shirt was taken during the years Gruen was Lennon's personal photographer. It has become one of the most internationally recognized and sought after rock n' roll photographs.
A native New Yorker, Gruen's photographs are especially enigmatic of the New York City glam and punk rock scenes of the 70s and 80s, the scenes at Max's Kansas City, CBGBs and the Mercer Arts Center when punk emerged when bands unknown careened to infamy - Patti Smith, the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Blondie, Iggy and the Stooges, the Ramones, the New York Dolls, Television, Suicide.
Gruen was seen on the scenes by many and his repertoire is astonishing - Muddy Waters to Bob Marley; The Rolling Stones to Madonna - Gruen's photography has been instrumental in telling the rock n' roll stories that define decades of rock music.
